Ketchup is not for free in Denmark

While in the rest of the world ketchup, mayo and any other dressing or salsa for the food is free of charge, in Denmark you have to pay if you would like to have some.
When Boyfriend and I arrived at the airport it was time for lunch but since we had to way for a long time for our luggage (The Copenhagen airport has a problem with luggage on arrivals), it was almost 2 pm when we were finally out of the airport and the train we needed to take was leaving at 2:30 pm. We had to find a fast food restaurant.
I like Macdonald but there was no Macdonald near by so we had to go to a Burger King. After Boyfriend paying for our food I ask for some ketchup for the fries and he said “if you want ketchup we will have to pay for them” but I saw there was ketchup at the front of the cashier, however, after looking closely I saw a price!.
I couldn’t believe, I thought he was joking.
Boyfriend says everything in Denmark has a price and he wouldn’t be surprise if they would charge extra for heating in the train!
I have always told Boyfriend he is “duro” which it’s a word we use in Panama to describe people who do not like to spend money. He prefers to freeze to dead than paying for extra heating in the house…
However, now that I’m in Denmark I found out that it’s not only Boyfriend who is like that, it is the entire country! It is a cultural thing.
A Danish thing I guess…
There are some supermarkets where you have to pay extra if you needs bags for your groceries. I think that is a good way to make people stop using bags and just start reusing the ones they already have at home. It is good for the environment.
But I don’t know what the good thing about paying extra for ketchup is? Boyfriend thinks is to make people lets likely to eat ketchup… but what’s wrong with ketchup? hmm
